when i install fedora core 7, after going through all the coniguraitons and initializations, the screen goes black just as the login screen is about to come
if i restart the pc, then theres a problem with unclean disks and the problem persists

I get the same thing with ubuntu 7.04. It's really frustrating. I'm going to try to capture the kernel output just as it freezes, but I'm not sure how to do that. I've had to use Vista for a week now, and that's just cruel and unusual (at least it's better than ME *shudder*). I may contact hp, because they may know what the bug is. Maybe the grub site might have something.
Can you do me a favor, and boot up, let the machine crash at that blank screen, then do the following: (I'll give verbose instructions just in case)
boot a liveCD in rescue mode so it doesn't crash your machine (or just boot one that works, like www.damnsmalllinux.org, whatever). Then mount your hard drive partition: (mkdir /mnt/sda && mount /dev/sda<n> /mnt/sda - where <n> is the partition number. Then move into you hard drive's var/log directory (cd /mnt/sda/bar/log). Copy the files "dmesg" and "Xorg.0.log" to a usb key or some thing. If you don't know how to do that in the command-line, it's mkdir /mnt/sdb && mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdb . Then cp dmesg /mnt/sdb && cp dmesg /mnt/sdb . If that's confusing, please just write down and post the last like of those two files. Thanks.
Sorry I'm piling up posts here, but I want people to notice this. I figured it out: try adding nolapic to the kernel options. What I did was I booted up and looked at my dmesg logs and Xorg.0.log, which both seemed to just randomly stop, but Xorg.0.log ended with "ProcXCloseDevice close or not?", which was weird, and seemed to be yet another annoying, nebulous Xorg failure (said with great contempt). Then I decided to google both the bios error and the xorg error together, and I found another answers.launchpad site which described a problem exactly like this (also with HP hardware, but I'm not pointing any fingers). In one of the posts, someone said to try the kernel options: noacpi irqpoll nolapic acpi=off. I tried these, and it booted right up, no coaxing. ACPI has worked before for me, so I discounted those, and rebooted (which worked. Not only that, but it actually fully shut down this time). Then I removed nolapic and it didn't work. I swapped irqpoll for noalpic and it worked perfectly again. I'm going to try to figure out what I've disabled by doing that, but as you can tell, wireless is working, sound is working, so is ACPI, and X is definately working. Good luck.
