I'm trying to connect an external monitor to my E6400 via VGA (running CentOS 5.3). Right now, output is being cloned by both monitors at the resolution of the smaller one. The output of xrandr doesn't show multiple monitors like it should:

When I hit Fn+F8, what should happen is that the screens go blank, and then only one of them has output. It works when I'm in the BIOS and also in Ubuntu 9.04 (xrandr saw VGA and LVDS). In CentOS, nothing at all happens; xev doesn't even detect Fn+F8 being hit. This leads me to believe something in CentOS is too old, but I don't know what.
I know it's a long shot, but has anyone ever had a similar issue? Maybe there's some way to send a scancode to the BIOS and bypass X altogether?
