External monitor works booting from CD but not from hard disk

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I created a bootable Ubuntu 11.04 CD on a Mac. I then installed Ubuntu on the laptop. It works fine. However, there is a NEC MultiSync LCD 1720M monitor attached to the laptop. When I boot off the CD, the same content displays on both the laptop screen and the NEC screen without my having to do any key combinations. However, when I boot off the hard drive, the external monitor is not recognized. I tried adding something to xorg.conf, following a post I found online, but it did not help. Any suggestions?

Perhaps tell us a bit more about the problem.

Just "I tried adding something to xorg.conf", is really unhelpful to us, because it tells us ..... nothing informative.
  1. What is your video card (Make/model from the output of lspci please)?
  2. What did you add to xorg.conf ?
  3. What is the link to the advice you followed?
  4. Recent X does not need xorg.conf (and it is not even gcreated) unless you are using propriety drivers (NVIDIA, ATI), or you have chosen to create it yourself. So what, exactly, is going on here?

Be warned: I am using 10.04(LTS) so probably can't be very specific with help, but unless you post some more details, nobody else can either.

But welcome to LQ!

Smile Tabling for now

I haven't solved the issue, but do not need the external monitor for now, so I am not going to try to solve the problem. Thanks to all who read my post, and/or replied.
