Question External monitor problem in debian

Ok. I just installed debian on my laptop. For some reason, the external monitor I use just flashes random colors. Normally it works fine. I tried fn+f4 but it didnt work. Please help. I absolutely have to use this monitor as the backlight in the laptop is broken. I can barely see anything on it. I have some form of nvidia graphics card (I cant tell) and I am running debian i386.

Two Monitors

I use my Acer lap top with Ubuntu 8.10 with a projector to show Power Point Presentations. I find that I have to plug in the projector to the external port on the lap top before I power up the computer. Then it will power both the LCD and the projector. If I try to plug in the projector after I have powered up the computer, there is no output to the projector.
