External modem on IBM 600E-REdhat 7.3

Since I was unable to install Red Hat 8.0 on this dual boot machine (another post I made), I reverted to Red Hat 7.3 which had no problem installing. I also went into the ps2.exe utility program in order to have the machine recognize the serial port (/dev/ttyS1) and disable the modem port. When I try looking for the external modem (Which I used on another Red HAt box so I know that it works in Linux) using wvdialconf create, it cannot find the modem. However when I use Kermit and dial, after much delay for each command, I am able to dial out. My problem however is that

1) I do not get an echo except for "OK"
2) THe transmission to the modem is S_L_O_W - its like hte 1200 baud days all over again.
3) When I contact a SCO UNIX box, I get the banner "Open Server" and nothing else.

ANy suggestions of how to configure the external modem, or should I work on configuring the port using setserial ?

"ANy suggestions of how to configure the external modem"

One place that you could look is in /etc/wvdial.conf. You ned a line that says:
Baud = 57600
assuming that is the correct modem speed.
