Errr... nothing will install!!!!
 

Okay ya'll... here's the problem... As usual, I'm a new Linux user... and yes, I'm having serious problems installing on my laptop. Here's the background:

I installed Linspire five-0 problemless... then ... Ubuntu 5.04 on the same slightly older AMD 1.1gHz desktop system (Gateway) with absolutely no problem what-so-ever. So, I think.... okay, I'm ready to make the transition to my laptop (which is absolutely my desktop replacement).... so I try Ubuntu 5.04 first... no luck... hangs at 41% trying to find my CD drive... then Linspire... give me a really weird set of characters (no color) that says a Fatal Kernel or something that sounds like seriously burnt popcorn... of which, yeah... that's pretty bad. :)

Additionally, I've also tried to install Mepis ... which ONLY boots to the LIVE CD version... no option to even install.

Here's what I have.... a 2 month old Compaq V2000Z...

# AMD Turion 64 ML-37 (2.0GHz/1MB L2 Cache)
# 1gB DDR SDRAM
# 60 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
# DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
# ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M
# 54g Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
# 14.1" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x768)
# Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with SP2


What's goin' on folks? I love Linux and want to use it.... spread it's greatness... and understand how to support it ... but can't get past this prob....

I have the exact machine that you have, only with a ML-28 processor and 512 MB RAM.

Mepis works fine for me. Why are you unable to install? There is an icon on the desktop "INSTALL ME" which walks you through the installation pretty perfectly.

Which version of Mepis are you using? I am using Simply Mepis 3.3.2 test 02 or something like that.

Actually, two days after I posted this I did try MEPIS 3.3.2 and it did actually install. I didn't like it very much so now I'm trying the nightly builds of Ubuntu 5.10 and am trying to install it as I type this. I've also got downloads of SuSE 10.0 and Xandros OCE. I'll let ya'll know how it goes.
