Enabling Desktop Effects Resets my Session

Hi, I currently have FC6 installed on my AcerAspire 5050. Well, my friend had a Mac with XGL and says it only available for Macs? I thought Desktop Effects would be much similiar but everytime I click "Enable" the screens blacks out and return in a minute the login screen. Any help with this would be appreciated greatly. PS. I am still a noob so speak
