Angry eeepc 900 killed by hardy

I am a long time user of Ubuntu hardy (LTS).
I installed the hardy version of eee Ubuntu on my eeepc 900 and it worked like a dream for almost a year. It is installed on an SD card. Then I tried to shut down into suspend. I never did this- the macine was quick enough on a normal boot and shutdown.
On restart it does nothing- blank screen, no bios messages, nothing.
The power and disc LEDs light up and stay on. The blue wireless LED flashes on and off. The LEDs go off when I hold in the power button for about 10sec.
I have tried to push the little reset button, shorted the little trianular reset connectors under the flashdisc. I even pulled the guts out and disconnected the bios battery.
What next?

You could try a blind bios update, I know there is an issue similar to yours that happens to Acer One netbooks and there is a method to do this. Maybe you can do the same with your Asus.
