DVD Media error...

I have a "MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8177" drive in my Acer 230 travelmate which runs debian. When i play some (unencrypted) dvd's they tend to play fine until the picture freezes and i get a lot of those messages:

kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
kernel: hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x34
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector [so and so]

I think it continues through all the sectors on the dvd until it finally stops and i can eject it. I have tried with many different kernels and distros and always got the same error.

---hdparm:
/dev/cdrom:
HDIO_GET_MULTCOUNT failed: Invalid argument
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 1 (on)
readahead = 256 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid argument

Thanks in advance

Hi.

I take it you have tried different DVD's. Also original DVD's?

Do you get any other problems with it? Like reading other data CD's? Or audio CD's?

What other distros do you get the same error with? Let me know and tomorrow (australian time) I can run an Acer TravelMate 230 up for you and tell you if I get the same problem if you like. If I don't get the same problem, I would say it is hardware.

Let me know

Thank you for your quick reply.

I have used many different DVD's and CDRom's of all kind without a problem. I am not so sure about the data DVD's... but i never had problems with them. However the Video DVD's play fine for a while, but then the picture suddenly freezes and the errors above accure, also with other distro's that is. I have noticed that it seems to be the same "places" where this happens. Circa in the middle of the dvd. I can't play encrypted DVD's (same error as soon as it starts playing), even though my desktop computer can play them just fine. It could maybe be a problem with the firmware or a hardware problem as you suggested. Maybe you could be so kind and post the kernel configuration etc. so i can monkey around with it and find a solution.

Thanks
