DVD drive can't recognise some disks (Toshiba Satellite A100-192)

hi
I've Toshiba Satellite A100-192 (PSAA9)

the dvd rom is supermulti /DL
I've strange problem, the drive can deal only with (-R) disks but can't even recognise (+R) disks,
I tried many generic names,
also can't deal with some CD disks, either the drive can't see the disk or the drive hangs .

any advise please
thanks

Are you sure you have kernel-level support for all the optical drive filing systems? E. g. UDF is quite important to have your kernel capable of handling if you want to read UDF'ed discs...

Also (of course) are you sure your hardware is OK on the drive, and that the discs you have had so far that won't work are not themselves busted? Eg it looks as if the drive is malfunctioning because all the discs you have put in so far are blank or damaged?
