Dual monitors not working:Toshiba Satellite SA60, ATI Radeon Mobility 7000 IGP

Hi,

I am trying to get dual monitors set up on my Toshiba satellite sa60, which has the ati radeon mobility 7000 igp, on kubuntu 7.04. My laptop screen is a bog standard 1024x768@60Hz panel, and the secondary monitor I attempting to use is a hp pavilion f50, which runs at 1024x768@61Hz.

The gui system configuration fails completely - I end up with a wobbly screen on the external monitor, and a blank screen on the laptop. If I just plug the second screen into the laptop, I dont see anything on it, although the 2nd monitor indicates it is recieving signal.

I have tried running 'X -configure', but the resulting config file leaves me with a perfect external screen and a blank laptop.

I have also tried editing my xorg.conf file, along the lines of posts on similar threads, although I must admit to being a novice at x configuration. The test configuration I am using presently leaves me with 2 blank desktops, and is an attempt to combine the X -configure files with and without the external monitor

I should point out that I had grave difficulties getting my graphics card to run under fedora core, but I switched distros, and, using the ati driver, am able to use dri no problem. So (fingers crossed) I dont think the graphics card is the problem.

Below are the relevant parts of my working (single screen) xorg.conf, and of the test config file.

Any help/ advice would be much appreciated.

Thumbs up So were is the problem??

Hello

Try to find what isn't working.

Look in /var/log/Xorg.log

Check your modules (lsmod as root) to see what you have inserted in your kernel.

The driver for ATI (linux version ) is fglrx.
For instalation see tutorials or the ATI Instalation guide.

Good Luck.

ok cheers ill have a go at those.

however, the proprietary fglrx driver specifically does not support the 7000 IGP - but this card has since started working with the standard ati and radeon drivers after recent driver updates, and now works pretty well with those, it seems.

Ive had a play around with some of the parameters and used the methods suggested, without success as yet. When I load the xorg.conf below I get a total system crash and have to reboot, so unfortunately I cant run lsmod. However I am able to recover the Xorg log, which is listed below, after the conf file. Any help would be much appreciated.

Xorg.conf:

Ok, so heres an update.

I upgraded to kubuntu 7.10, and am now attempting to get the monitors working using xrandr 1.2. I think I am almost, but not quite there.

When I run 'xrandr --auto' both monitors appear (cloned screens), but the external lcd panel has a woblly display (as if the vertical refresh rate were wrong). However I cannot seem to solve this by changing the refresh rate of even playing with the modeline settings.

However, if I then run 'xrandr --output LVDS --off', followed by 'xrandr --auto', I obtain 2 perfectly working cloned screens. However, when I then try to set up my large desktop ie 'xrandr --output VGA-0 --LeftOf LVDS', it works but the wobbly screen problem returns, and no amount of messing with the refresh rate settings will fix this.

Any ideas?

I would suggest not posting those huge lists of (errors?) No-one is going to read all of that.

Can you post the current xorg.conf (just the sections relating to display, video card, server layout, screen. monitor, etc.

ok, the xorg.conf is (ive now got the hang of posting code):

	Load "glx"
	Load "GLcore"
	Load "dri"

EndSection

Section "Device"

EndSection

Section "Screen"

	DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"

Any ideas?

I think fonts are the problem.

Hello

I read the log's output.
It seems that you have a font problem.
You shoud use the failsafe (text mode) to fix it.
I like text mode, it is simple and to the point.
Use vim or mc to edit text files.
use links elinks or other for web browse.

good luck.

I dont think the font errors are a problem here, the log file states that they are just ignored + X loads up fine with that font config (they are part of the xorg.conf that I am using now). The problem is I cant get both monitors working rather than that I cant get x working at all.

Cheers

Ive just tested my computer with a different 1024x768 75/60Hz external monitor (dadam L-151), and I still get the same problem, so it doesnt appear to be monitor specific.
