Drifting, falling mouse pointer on Tecra S1

Can anybody explain to me why my mouse pointer will often slide down the screen without any input from me? Other times it drifts sideways or up, but usually slides straight down the screen, maybe wrapping to the top again.

I am running the Fedora Core distro (2.4.22-1.2129.nptl) on my Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop. I upgraded from RedHat 9 about two week ago, which never gave me any problems.

The touchpad is usually disabled when this behavior starts up, but I can usually use the trackpoint. Sometimes both are disabled. Sometimes the pointer freezes alltogether mid-screen. The only solution I've found for this is to shutdown and restart.

Any help or even explanation of this behavior is appreciated.

Thanks,
Pneum0
