draksound problem with SiS7018

I am trying to get the sound to work automatically. Soundworked under Mandrake 9.0. WhenI upgraded to 9.1 sound does nothing but crash. I did a tar gz upgrade of complete alsa system and I got sound working. Sound won't work from start. I have to kickstart it by going into Control Center, select something and go back to auto detect or OSS. I then have to launch aumix to load volumes. Harddrake2 has driver as snd-trident. draksound gives error ["" unlisted driver]. lspci -v says unknown device for audio accelerator.
snd-trident appears to be correct driver and is listed in modules.pcimap for vendor/devid combo.

0x1309/0x7018

modules.conf:
#ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-trident
#module operations go here

#OSS/Free portions
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd

# card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
above snd-trident snd-pcm-oss

Dear ksnash,

I'm a newbie in linux and using the mandrake 9.1. My sound card is same as yours (sis7018) and got the same result (the sound card is not working). Could you please help? I want detail steps to fix this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Rgds,

The best procedure to start out with is to reinstall alsa. remove it with rpm manager and reinstall. It looks like on mine it could have been an update issue 9.0->9.1. I created a new user on my machine and the new user sound works as it should. I did something originally that could have been bad, I installed the tar.gz version. tar.gz can cause problems when rpm version is installed.

there are two different alsa drivers regular alsa (trident) and then oss driver (snd-trident). snd-trident seems to soundbetter.

I don't know if they have updated the Mandrake rpms yet you shouldbeable to look for them on rpmfind.net. There should be about 4 files to install (alsa -core, oss, utils, xxx)
