Do I need a wireless driver for linux mint in a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983?

I'm confused because the laptop wireless reads at 100% when I boot in windows. That makes sense because the wireless router is right here on the desk. But when I'm in linux I get 15% and the connection is spotty. If I didn't have a driver wouldn't I get nothing at all? I've looked in Administration/Driver Manager and it's reported that there are no proprietary drivers in use. If I go to networking it list my network and 4 others in the area. How can I be getting a list of wireless connections if the driver isn't there?

Mark S,

If you don't have inxi already, then install it:

Open Terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-get install inxi
What is the output of:

Code:
inxi -Fxz
Code:
rfkill list all
For remaining commands, look at post #2 from rokytnji here:

Please let us have those various outputs in your reply.

Hi...

That's correct, if there were no driver (and firmware, if applicable) in place, you wouldn't be receiving be a list of connections or be able to log into a network. Sometimes Linux wireless drivers are not as good as their Windows counterparts (or have problems) because of reverse engineering, lack of OEM support or other issues.

If you would, please open a terminal and post the results of...

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
Regards...
