display power management: yes or no?
 

ok, i have linux installed on a laptop and because i cannot put it on standby, i was thinking of using the display poer management option to save a little battery time but the help page regarding that function says i should not use it because the laptop power management options are much better.

Since i cannot put that to work, should i go ahead and use regular display power management or will that somehow "hurt" the display?

This is a completely and totally confusing post. With no distro or hardware info posted for anyone to help you with.

I have linux on my laptop, and, standby, suspend, power management, cpu throttling, EVERYTHING, is supported completely and 100% with even a gui tool to adjust screen brightness and tv-out and cpu speed...

I'm really interested to read that you have standby, suspend, power management and cpu throttling, working 100% because I have just broken my second laptp hard disk. I think the reason this keeps happening is because the laptop is not running these features and overheats. Please can you say what hardware you have and which distro and extra packages you have installed? I'm thinking that one solution for me might be to start again with a new laptop.

I was running dual boot with Mandrake 10 and XP using GRUB bootloader on IBM Thinkpad R31. Now that the hard disk says it has bad clusters I'm not running anything. I've tried Mandrake Rescue and the IBM product recovery CD without success.

in linux power managerment features are built in to the kernel through acpi

u must recompile the kenrel with acpi enabled and with 'thermal zone' etc enabled

can you tell us which laptop do you have, and which distro are you using? I've an Acer 6003LMi, running Mandrake 10.0, and the CPU throttling is working perfect, but I can't get standby or suspend working. Any help is more than welcome.
