display illegible after lid opening on thinkpad x41 with SuSe 10.0

Installed opensuse 10 on my new lenovo thinpad x41. Got most things working fine, but closing the lid and reopening (with or without a delay, with or without the screen having blanked) gives an unreadable screen. It looks like the scanning repeat interval is all messed up. Ctrl-alt-f1, followed by ctrl-alt-f7 gets the screen back to normal, but it would be good to know if there were a way of avoiding the problem in the first place.
