Display Error when restarting x

Hi!
I just played with some features of my GeForce2Go card. I'm using Red Hat 8.0 on a Dell Inspiron 8100.
Now let's come to the problem:
All I wanted to do is putting some layouts inside my XF86Config so I could output to a beamer, cloning the desktop or using the tv-out. So I did and then wrote myself a shell script which changes the actual server layout and restarts x. So far so good, but if I change the layout a few times, the display only shows some strange colors... Only restart of the notebook seems to bring it back to life. I think it happens everytime when I go back from a low resolution (e.g. 800x600 for beamer) to a higher one (e.g. 1400x1050 for normal use). If I restart the notebook with the _changed_ configuration all works fine again, so my XF86Config seems to be right. Is this a phenomenon of the Dell displays (or what vendor it would be)? Or sounds that to you like a X configuration error? The thing that makes me wonder is, that I've to switch off the notebook to reactivate the display...

You may try to use FrameBuffer mode (for the console only). This is a common remedy for this kind of problems. Or try to remove FrameBuffer mode if it is activated. If your Kernel has FrameBuffer support already it is sufficient to use a boot option like vga=791 to get it. For details see the FrameBuffer-HOWTO http://tldp.org or the Linux-Mobile-Guide http://tuxmobil.org/howtos.html
