Disable touchpad - ASUS UL50 - Ubuntu 10.04

How can I disable the touchpad on my ASUS UL50 while running Ubuntu 10.04? The windoze driver allows disabling it when a mouse or trackball is connected.

I would be happy to be able to disable it completely or when actually typing.

I installed the pointer control from the ubuntu collection, but it doesn't recognize that there is a touchpad installed; it thinks it is a mouse.

Thanks!!

10.04 sees my (new in 2010) Sony laptop's touchpad as an ALPS. There are lots of problems with it (eg. it can't be disabled through the GUI etc).

This worked for me:
Code:
sudo modprobe -r psmouse
The touchpad is now completely disabled, but the USB mouse works fine. I'm happy.

synclient TouchpadOff=1 gives me a response

"Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?"

sudo modprobe -r psmouse works beautifully to disable. Can you tell me how to reverse it?

Thank you.

To reverse that step, put the module back with the command:

sudo modprobe psmouse

(The -r in the other command means remove the module)
