developing linux for mobile phone

Hey there I am doing a project on developing linux for mobile phones. But before that I have to finalise a mobile phone . I want to know that what all information I need to gather about the mobile phone like processor info., architecture etc. Please suggest which mobile phone I should work on.

i'd start with one that was linux friendly already

not a model that has linux on it already, but from a company that has showed a liking to linux.

i'd work on one that was easiest from there on out, so getting the os done wouldn't take forever.

i'd also try to pick one that was popular already so more people would see how great linux was.
