Delll Inspiron 4100 no sound, Crystal 4205

I'm very new to Linux. I have installed ubuntu on this Dell laptop. During the installation I got two error messages: "cpufreq: change failed with new state 1 and result 0," with reference numbers. I have no idea what that means or if it's related to the problem, which is no sound from the Crystal 4205 card. The machine doesn't seem to recognize any audio component at all. Should I try a different Linux distribution? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

1. Check the BIOS settings for the sound card. On some dells they can be changed to emulate another soundcard.
2. Try setting the card up as a generic soundblaster 16

Thanks for replying. It appears I can't change the card identity in the BIOS.

So far ALSA (free) or 4 Front Tec (pay) does not have your Crystal 4205 driver listed.

I guess that means that no other distribution is going to work either -- so no point in trying Suse or any of the others? If I really want sound, that is.

yea - however, Cirrus Logic the maker of the soundcard uses AC97 codec so maybe there is a some hope.

good luck
