Dell XPS M1530 - Dell ubuntu ISOs?

Hi all,

Just put in an order for an xps m1530. I live in a country where Dell don't offer Ubuntu yet and the guy on the phone refused to sell the lappy without vista on it *sic*.

I checked Dell's wiki and there are a few ubuntu ISOs for different systems although not the m1530. Do you recon I should go with one of these images anyway or am I better of just going for a stock linux distro?

The question here really is, are there any goodies on those ISOs?

I can't think of anything else but maybe some (proprietary) drivers they may have added to the original Ubuntu, or then just some minor "tweaks" to make it look more Dell-ish (like add some programs not installed right out of the box in the stock Ubuntu). Haven't tried so I wouldn't know. But if you're about to buy a laptop without Linux, you can just as well download any Linux distribution you prefer and install that - I don't think the Dell images give you anything extra that you couldn't get from the others. But if you later find you would prefer the Dell images, it's not a problem to download and use them instead then..

I'd maybe stick to stock Ubuntu if Ubuntu is what you like (I do). And if there are problems with it and the hardware, then see if the Dell images have something in them that helps.

Well, I'd probably keep on running Slackware. Got it running on my work laptop, a Latitude D620. Everything working just fine.

Was just thinking if they had any bells and whistles packed on the ISO. Maybe a ready set up config files tweaked for the hardware... would save me some time.

Just for reference should anyone be searching for this later.

Everything I've tested is working on the Laptop. Ubuntu 7.10 come with all drivers needed.

For fingerprint reader you need Thinkfinger

If you have the 8600GT and 1440x900 screen the screen will be black during some parts on the boot. See enable vesa framebuffer (ubuntu 7.10)

Very happy with the computer so far. Strongly recommend!

I just got XPS M1530 and installed ubuntu 8.04 beta on it.
Excellent machine except for microphone is not working?
There were various suggestion as to flash BIOS with newer one, which causes problems with touchpad, and compiling your own alsa which I didn't try but lot of feedback is negative. i.e, not a working solution.

Anyone else having problems with microphone on XPS M1530?
Any suggestions?
