Dell m1210

Hey all, I'm looking at picking up a Dell m1210. It seems like everything should be okay, Nvidia card, and a wifi card that works for sure. I was just wondering if anyone has one. The HCL doesn't have an entry, nor linux-latops. Just wondering how it works.. Thanks in advance.

Awesome, thanks. How is the ACPI?

stevie_velvet 07-03-2006 04:12 PM

would't try acpi ~ as a qualified Toshiba & IBM Laptop engineer ~ i'n never enabled PowerManagment for users

Doolspin 07-03-2006 10:18 PM

Are we talking about the same thing? ACPI is suspend to ram, sleep, and screen off when lid closes. Correct?

stevie_velvet 07-04-2006 02:08 AM

yep, power managment covers hat ~ the only thing i can cnfirm is that the monitor does indeed shut off ~ acpi is one of the busiets development cycles in linux ~ & the bulit-in code clearly works a little with the xps m1710, hence smoe of the older xps units as well ~ but i don't plan to test further, for example i use the unit without the battery very often

Doolspin, I got mine two days ago. I managed to install OpenSuSE 10.1 on it works fine! I am using Gnome for the first time (I was a KDE guy).

- Touchpad works fine! Even the scrollbar controls (on the pad) are working properly.
- Wireless is also working fine. I had to install a patch for the wifi before I can make it working but that was already on the OpenSuSE dvd.
- Bluetooth worked well. I didn't need to do anything. The blue LED doesn't turn on but that's fine. It doesn't mean that it is not working.
- sound is working fine.
- I have the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 (256MB) graphic card. I am not sure if NVidia has a linux driver for my card; I had a quick look on their website and my impression was that they don't have it for linux yet. There are some minor issues with graphic card. E.g., sometimes when the monitor is turned back on, colors are damaged. I hope it's a driver issue not a hardware one. Also, mouse cursor sometimes leaves some trails on some components (like in Gimp) or while editing in certain edit boxes. I will look more into that.
- Buit-in camera and mic does not work. I guess the whole device is not recognized properly. It's not a big deal for me now.

Regarding ACPI:
- Hibernation works fine.
- Suspend is not supported by SuSE.

Did I miss anything? Overall, I think it's a nice piece of work! I like it. I wasn't sure to buy it, but I am happy with it now. Let me know if you have more questions.

BTW, if anyone had a chance to get the camera (specially the built-in mic) working, please let us know.

Hey, I found this awesome page on installing SuSE 10.1 on Dell M1210. This guy even managed to set up the camera.

keep an eye on it as he may update the page once in a while.
