Dell Latitude e6510 is not booting with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
 

Need to understand which version to install on this core i7 720QM CPU machine with bluetooth, touchpad, 4gb ram, wifi Intel centrino 6200, nvidia 3100 NVS.

I tried installing 64bit, 32 bit 9.10 and 10.04 none of these versions boot the machine.

only Arch distro works on this machine but this is a text based.

I need something like Ubuntu desktop on my machine with installation inside windows (like wubi installer). With good power management built into it. Also there are features that enable to access the email in outlook without even booting the machine (Dell Onreader).

Please advice me on the 64 bit distros that are available.

i7 is 64-bit. All of those Ubuntus should work. "none of these versions boot the machine" is of no diagnostic use at all. - what happens; any messages ?. Have you tried a recovery mode boot ?.

If you plan on using Arch you'd better do some reading. The wiki has info on installing X and a DM.

As for the rest, try a VM - I like VitrualBox on Windoze for running Linux guests. I neither know nor care about outlook, so can't help there.

I've used the Latitude E6410, it's really quite a beast. It will be a challenge to run any distro on this machine since it uses UEFI instead of a BIOS. Only boot GPT disks & does not seem to be able to boot any Linux LiveCD.

I'd say the best bet is a VM as syg00 suggests. VirtuaBox or VMware Player.

I got an error message while booting from ubuntu live cd "expectng X86_64 CPU this machine has i686 CPU"

the kernel does not allow to boot even.

Any other suggestions?

That doesn't make any sense - I have a i7 Q820 laptop and run nothing but 64-bit.

Is this booting natively (i.e. not as a virtual guest) ?.

This is brand new laptop and it has win 7 64bit Prof running. I installed virtualbox and I was able to run Fedora 13. But Fedora 13 does not work with MS virtual PC.
Basically I wanna dual boot this machine with Ubuntu.

Maverick (to be released by Oct) is the version most likely to work on this as I understand.

I've just gotten one of these on my desk and it looks to be a problem with X. Once X starts the screen goes dark, and the drives spin down. I had planned on just installing 10.04 on this, but will be needing delve deeper... Finding this thread was part of that process.
