Dell Latitude D600 and Suse 9.1 -> X dies without warnings frequently
Hi,
I have a problem running Linux on my laptop. The X server suddenly dies with no warning. I haven't found anything from logs, it just dies. I thought that replacing the X-server would have helped, so I have updated from the original XFree86 to the latest X.org and the same problem happens with that. In the original Suse configuration the error occurred when I pressed '~' -character in Konqueror. Every time '~' was given to the url -> crash. Now it does not do it there anymore but creating the default .ui -file -dialog in QtDesigner does it everytime so because of that it is currently quite much unusable. And it is not the only program. Nearly every KDE program causes the X to die at some point. I have tried quite much everything, compiling new Gnome from sources, installing various versions of KDE (now running the latest 3.3.1) and various X.org versions. Nothing seems to help. I am running the X with the default drivers found in it and have not tried to hack 3D acceleration for the Mobility Radeon 9000 chip found from the laptop because from my experience the ATI drivers rarely work right - for example I tried installing the 3D acceleration to my home computer which is running Suse 9.2 and X no longer starts, apparently I need now to manually correct the X config. Any ideas what could help? I am going to install Suse 9.2 perhaps today to the laptop though, but I am fearing that the problem will remain. It is my work laptop so I would prefer it to be stable and work most of the time without glitches... Best Regards, Karoliina Salminen |
i had similar problems with an fsc labtop ... Yesterday i installed 9.2 and i am very happy with this decision since 9.2 i have no more problems with my x-server and the little "labbi" runs just fine ....
So i would recommend you installing with 9.2 |
Thanks!
I installed 9.2 and it haven't crashed yet a single time. Lets see how it will turn out in the longer run. Hopefully it solved it out! The graphics chip appears to be ATI RV250 Lf. 3D acceleration seemed to be with the Suse, so I did not need to mess up with the driver installation. Suse 9.2 is very nice... Best Wishes, Karoliina |
I'm having the same problem: with SuSe 9.2 ...
