Dell latitude CPx. How to intall with ext USB CDROM?

Hi,

I have a dell laptop CPx running on windows XP. I want to install Redhart Linux on it. However, The do I install now that windows is complaning of Drive seek 1(CDROM) failure. I have resolved to use USB CDROM to install. But my concern is the whether I can use this method to carry install.

Again is somebody has an Idea how to make my cdrom working I will appreciate since I will be saved the cost of buying new USB CDROM.

Again, Is there a way I can intall Linux without first backing up my HDD, partition into two, Install widows and then Linux?

I want to believe their is a software that can help do that
