Question Dell keys in Mandrake 10.1

Hi, I have just finished upgrading to Mandrake 10.1 on my Dell Inspiron 5100. Because Mandrake decided to ditch XF86 for the new XOrg I can no longer use the dell special keys on my keyboard (volume up, down, etc). I have already tried lineak but it requires X to be installed.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Xmodmap may be the way to go. If your keys generate keycodes, then you can map them to fuctions. xev will tell you your keycodes.

ok, so I have installed it, but how to i tell it NOT to use gnome defaults for the apps? Like, i want firefox to open instead of epiphany and konqueror instead of nautilus.

can i just go into gnome and change it's defaults?

I havent tried to launch apps from the buttons so I dont know. I just use them to lower and raise the volume.
