dell inspiron resolution problem

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop. I recently installed Linux Mandrake 9.2 Everything worked except the resolution can't go in the higher ones like 1680 x1050. I found some code lines on the internet to insert into the xfreeconfig file, but it wouldn't let me as it was read only. Any body know how to fix?

<root password>
kate /path/to/xf86config
Change the settings, save the file, close kate
