Dell Inspiron 6000 display problem with Ubuntu 11.04

Hello,

I have been trying Ubuntu 11.04 off a USB stick on my Dell Inpiron 6000. All was good so I dived in and loaded Ubuntu onto the laptop. Now, when I switch on, the display is good but after I log in, all the display goes grainy and the dashboard and topbar are totally unreadable. I have tried rebooting several times, nothing changes and also tried rebooting from the USB again, but the display was still bad. Any suggestions.....?

Thanks,
Phil

Run the command lspci in a terminal and report back what kind of video card you have.

I used to have a Dell Inspiron 6000. Ran Slackware 10.x and Debian 5 on it. No problems. Finally the display died. It served me well.

Hi there, thanks for replying...I ran lspci and got this "ATI Technologies inc M22 (Mobility Radeon X300)"

Bu the way, I have kind of cured the problem by opening Ubuntu in Safe Mode, but I lost all the U1 stuff

Cheers,
Phil

This thread from the Ubuntu forums might help.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

Beyond that, this is getting outside my realm of experience.
