Dell Inspiron 1100Graphics Driver for ubuntu Jaunty

Hello everyone,

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100 with i8** Video card, I was running ubuntu gutsy 7.10 on it for months and everything was fine including CompizFusion effect etc...
Due to the old software repositories, I decided to do a fresh install of Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04. But now, I can't enable any desktop effects!
I tried upgrading the xserver-xorg-video-intel but that had killed my display so I used recovery mode to restore it
Also I tried installing xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4 from ppa.launchpad repositories, but that did not fix the problem with the desktop effects.
HELP! I need to run a new release of ubuntu to get firefox 3.x.x and other up-to-date software, but will that cause me to lose my video driver????

Any solutions please ...

If you have intel graphics and want to use desktop effects like compiz, you will likely run into trouble. If you use intel graphics and don't care about desktop effects you should be ok. I have intel 945GM graphics on my laptop and I run 9.04 without any desktop effects, and I have no problems.

If you do not use intel graphics this will not apply to you at all. So if this is not an issue for you, then upgrade to 9.04. It has newer stuff and all that. Also, read the release notes for 9.04:
For what it's worth, I always do clean installs with Ubuntu instead of dist-upgrades. It is the best way to avoid problems imo.
