Dell Inspirion 8500 Red Hat 9

Hello -

I am having serious trouble installing a Broadcom 4401 Ethernet card. Basically, I have the driver, but for some reason it won't allow me to install due to problems with the compile. It has a ton of errors, and it won't allow me to redirect them to a file, so I am unable to print them out for you. I do know quite a bit about C, so I attempted to take a look and see if there actually are errors, or if there is something wrong with the opsys. Obviously, there are know errors that I can tell with the driver, so my conclusion is that there must be something wrong with the system. Here is my system outline:

Dell Inspirion 8500
Broadcom 4401

Red Hat 9.0
Linux Kernel 2.4.20

Thanks a lot for everyone's help -

I compiled this driver with a 2.4.20 kernel and it worked great.

Now I'm using a 2.4.22 kernel and I can't get it to work, any suggestions out there?

How did you do it?

I used the .rpm and basically just used rpm -ivh to build the new kernel. Unfortunately, I am still getting a bunch of C errors when I try to compile the driver. How did you get the driver to work? Did you just do a make/make install? I am really confused as to why I am having trouble compiling the source code. I even have the kernel source in the correct directory and everything!

When you do "make" does it exit with an error? If so, what is the error?

Well, it responds Make: ***** Error 1, after a long list of compile time errors, all of which for some reason I cannot redirect to a file. I even tried to simply use gcc outright, but to no avail. NO redirection seems to be able to be used. I would like to display the errors here for you to see, but alas...

Anyway, could it be a problem maybe with me not installing the new kernel correctly? I tried it with the old kernel I had, which was the default kernel with RH9, but the same errors came up. I thought the kernel install process would be more complex that it was, as I just used rpm to install it.

I was having the same problems using Redhats kernel, so I downloaded the 2.4.20 kernel from kernel.org compiled my custom kernel and then compiled the bcm4400 driver and using the RPM method and it worked like a champ. The 2.4.22 kernel has a build in Broadcom driver, but I couldn't get that to work. It would compile, but whenever I tried to get an ip address it failed. I would try getting the kernel from kernel.org and giving that a shot.

I am using a dell insp. 5100 and I d/l'd the driver from broadcom and followed the readme and it works without a problem. Is this where you folks got your driver?

edit: http://www.broadcom.com/docs/driver-download.html
