Dell CPiR 400, NM 256ZX no sound via ALSA
 

I've got a Dell Latitude CPiR 400 running Suse 9 (latest patches, kernel 2.4.21-243-default) with ALSA 0.9.6-66 installed. Playing a MP3 using mpg123 and specifying the output to either the speakers or headphones works fine, however none of the GUI clients (KDE 3.1 and 3.3) work. I've tried Xmms, KRadio, and Kscd. When I strace'd mpg123 it was outputing the sound via /dev/dsp0 which sounds right, Xmms never seems to open an output file descriptor...

I'm sure it's fairly obvious but I'm stumped as to what's going on here.
