dell 700m emits odd sounds

So after I install fedora core 3 on my new dell 700m, my computer starts to emit a low pitch whining noise. I'm still in the middle of trying to troubleshoot it, but I haven't had much time. However, I've noticed that this problem doesn't occur immediately after I install fc3 (thus, it probably isn't a hardware issues..... or not an obvious one at least). So, I'm starting to think that maybe one of the settings I'm changing is causing the issue (although I don't actually do anything too drastic: just small things like appearances, enabling my ethernet card, etc). Has anyone else had this issue? Or any suggestions?

9/10 times bizarre sound issues are something with the sound card and feedback... Honestly, open up a mixer and mute the microphone (or everything), and see if it goes away. Back with my IBM i1400, I had to gut the thing to get the power pin soldered back in order and in re-assembly clipped the mic line, which caused the thing to scream as soon as the driver was loaded... and I had a script to mute it right after it was loaded. Still the high pitched moment of squeal freaked out a lot of people... especially on airplanes :-P

Cheers,

I use gentoo linux and I had the same issue.

it bootsfine, past alsa loading etc, then it got to "coldplug" service.

and after that the high pitch noise started.

I disabled this and re-booted and the sounds seems to have stopped.

watch your boot up and note when the noise starts.

if it's the same as mine, it's not audio noise, it's electronic noise coming from the pc itself.

hope this helps.
