Dell 500m Problems with display and graphics

ok I need help wiht getting my display to work right. i have the downloaded mandrake 9.2 and kernel 2.6.0. I went to the intel site to get the driver for my 82852/82855 GM/GME. its also know as the Intel Extreme Graphics. I have the 1040x1050 laptop display. I know that the chipset only support 1024x768 16bit in linux. My issue is that everytime I boot I have to do a scan and use those dang VESA driver during the load and I can't see the hole screen I have to use the mouse to scroll across to see the rest of it. can anyone help me out? I will try to get my startx log over to my windows side of my 500m

sorry, this is not a helping hand.
I just want to cry with you.

I am helping a friend who has a Dell latitude D500 notebook.
when he does an install with a low resolution (480x640), mandrake boots up normally.
when he want to change it in Mandrake control centre nothing happens, log out and log in, same.

when I reinstalled it ( he is learning anyway) with a resolution of 1024x768 , the computer hangs (freeze) on reboot.
message:you passed an undefined node number.
press return to see video nodes available
press space to continue or wait 30 seconds.

waited for 10 minutes--nothing
pressed return---nothing

I would appreciate some help, as I adviced him to use Mandrake.
the reason I post for him is that his english is very poor.

thanks

google for the 855patch, for dell 500m it gives you more video ram, which solves any problems with x, search on dell's us forums for 1400x1050 500m or something, I'm running my 500m on 1280x1024 thanks to it.

thanks , I will try to find it.
as it happens, this friend of mine just left the house about 10 minutes ago, before I read your mail
we tried Mandrake, suselive, knoppix and an old version of lindowsOS.
all the same
It will boot up with a screen that is much bigger than the physical screen.
we will try again on Thursday
thanks for the reply
