Dell 1100 Screen Resolution

Doesn't that ring hell to you experienced users?

Hi I am fairly new to linux but have installed a few distros in the past. However, I am not very confident with command line stuff (terminals, etc). Now that you're probably groaning I'll ask my question. I installed Fedora a few days ago on my Dell Inspiron 1100 which has a 1024 display. Fedora seems to like to default to 640, and I can't switch to to any other res.. This, in a word, sucks. So I was reading some posts and I saw a link to a third-party patch on a geocities site. But that's gone.
Here are my specs:
Dell 1100 w/ 1024 display
intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV graphics controller
256mb ram
P4 2.2 gig
etc..
The specs are taken from windows, in linux the graphics controller showed up as 845G I think. If somebody could help me get the resolution set as 1024 with a good color depth that'd be great. Also I use my laptop as my main computer so at home I hook it up to a Sony CRT.. I'll tackle that later though. For now, the laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Oh yeah, BIOS vs. = A22.

man i'm on the same boat as you, i can't get the resolution any bigger then 640, on windows i get 1024 on the laptop display and 1600 when i connect the CRT, i also have bios vs= a22

I've tried a few things and still no luck....

That's the config file after I use the Display program in RH Menu->System Settings->Display. I also made a few modifications that I found in a config file somebody published that I found in the sticky note section at the top of the laptop forum. I added the VideoRam line in the Device section and switched the order of the resolutions in the SubSection "Display"... One time I also set the Depth to 24 but X couldn't start. What does DRI mean and what does that section do? This is really the extent of my information and its hard to learn linux on a 640 screen. Arg. I need the god of 1024x768 screen resolutions to come down and touch my laptop... you would be good too. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

dri is for 3d acceleration, you don't need that for normal usage. I have the i5100 which is almost identical as the 110, uses the same bios too (I believe) , just different video chipset. Is there any error or warning when you start X ? check the X log.

Also check tuxmobil.org , tons of info on the Dell 1100 there.

Its really simple to fix this problem!

Download this: http://www.geocities.com/randomnumbe...d_A29_1100.zip and unzip it.

Burn the CD image to a disk. Restart the computer with disk in the drive. Hit F12 and select your CD Drive to boot off.

At the a:/> command prompt type: i1100a29. It will install on it's own and it will fix itself!
