Debian testing apt pinned with unstable to pull out updated packages needed. - Will this strategy work good in a new HP laptop?
Hello,
I have a new HP 15-BS576TX laptop which has AMD/Intel switchable graphics and got a 7th gen i5 7200U processor. I have Windows 10 also installed in it, since my job needs occassional booting into Windows.
Now, during the earlier times (2004-5 time IIRC), I learned about apt-pinning and was quite content using Debian testing as the primary distro with apt pinning with preferences set to download needed packages from unstable.
My question is: How well is Debian testing working with new hardware and especially in laptops? Is there any quirks expected?
It's testing, of COURSE there's quirks expected...that's what makes it testing.
In my recent experience, the 4.13 line of kernels no longer works with my docking stations line out port, so when docked I have no audio with Buster. I'm sure there'll be more to come.
As to the pinning, I do that as well, and as long as you make sure to pin SID to a low enough priority so that it doesn't try to upgrade everything to it, works fine.
Does anybody ran wayland (Xwayland) on Debian testing? Also, for "amdgpu" driver support, is there any private repositories available for Debian? I know, of Padoka, Oibaf etc, still would like to know, if, any Debian specific repos exist.
