I have just installed the debian linux with disc 1 only... but i found that i cannot use startx to access the X window GUI interface.... so i would like to ask how i can install the GUI X-window?

how many disc should i use? (as there is 7 discs, and the official web says that no need to use all if not using special packages)

Hi,

I assume your Debian system is running fine - but without X -, you installed from the stable tree and your machine is connected to the Internet.

Then the most simple way to get an X-server running, is to install e.g. kde.
Code:

apt-get install kde
If you wan'na use another windowmanager, just replace 'kde' with the name of the package.

If you wan'na do it from scratch, post a message. This will need a little more information.

Hope I can help you so far ...

how about if i have not connected to the internet?

If you don't have an Internet connection things are a little bit more tricky.

You said , you have only the first cd out of the Debian CD-set (which are7 CDs).

Well, please take a look at '/etc/apt/sources.list' and post what you've found.

The next thing to do is, to execute 'tasksel', which is a tool to select packages after different tasks. There you have to select "X-Window-System" and take a look to the output. Please don't forget to insert your Debian CD first.

If the output ask you about another cdrom, e.g. cdrom 2 or so, I'm sorry but then you have to download and burn the other cdroms. If there were no questions about other cdrom, things should be run fine.

OK so far ...

Actually, i am following the procedures of installation from this web
http://www.aboutdebian.com/install3.htm

However, i have no idea why i don't get the task installer ..at this stage..

The Task Installer appears with a list of task packages you can select using the space bar. Only select following at this time:

X window system
C and C++

Tab to Finish and press Enter.

Can you tell me why?

thanks
