Debain on Dell Inspiron 5000e - Display messed up.

I just installed debian version sarge onto my dell inspiron 5000e. Besides having problems w/my ethernet card which i just decided to take care of later, when i logged in there was a part of my screen that was kind of blurred. Its only about 1 cm wide and runs from the top of the screen to the bottom. The rest of the screen is fine and shows the gui. The video card is an ATI Rage 128. For the driver part of the intallation i chose ati. Did i do something wrong?

Check the resolution and make sure that it matches the physical screen (1600x1200 I believe), also the timings might be slightly off. You could also try limiting to 16 bit colour as I've read in a couple of places that 24 bit colour caused some problems when switching resolutions.

yes.. you need to visit ati.com and download their driver version for the laptops, this will install the correct official drivers and should get your computer using the correct resolution.
