Angry Couple problems, 10.10 ubuntu doesnt seem to work and splash screen looks way too big

Hello, just as the topic suggests, i am having trouble with this. It probably seems pretty noobish, and truth be told i feel like a noob posting this as i have been using ubuntu for a couple years now with little to no problems. But i got a new laptop yesterday, HP ProBook 4710s and i instantly installed ubuntu 10.10 on it, and it installed just fine, but then after the install when i went to boot it up it flashed the splash screen then went black. So i tried reinstalling, same issue. Then i tried installing 10.04 and upgrading and still the same problem. It was so infuriating that i just gave up and stayed on 10.04, which after installing it i found out that my wireless card isnt supported innately, it requires the proprietary driver, wasnt bad but that meant that i had to go to the main house and plug my laptop into the modem... little inconvenient but im still here. lol. Now, with this the splash screen looks all big and distorted, not performance effecting, but a little annoying is all. So i am looking for a solution to both of my problems, hopefully there is one as i enjoy trying out the new upgrades as they come out and cant move on to the 11's till i get 10.10 working. Please help!!! lol im kinda desperate

If wanting a init3 boot up screen instead of spinning circle or splash in Ubuntu.

That one was written for 9.10 but I believe it should work with 10.04 as well.

Old School boot screen

I had big problems getting 10.10 to install to a new sony vaio. 10.04 did not work at all.
The 10.10 live CD ran well, but the HDD install would not boot.

I needed to add the following to the kernel boot line: acpi_oci="Linux"
or was it acpi_osi="Linux" ? Sorry, I forget and the laptop is with its rightful owner now.

It is worth a trying them both, one at a time.
