Could not install KNOPPIX to my Dell Inpiron 2200 laptop Hard-drive

Hey

I'm a newbie to linux.I want to install Windows and Debian dual boot System. I used KNOPPIX-INSTALLER-LATEST-WEB try to load KNOPPIX to my Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop. The problem is I simply could not finish the partision with QTPARTED. It stucks at 83% of partition the hda8 disk with is ext2 type. I've already run out of my ideas which is not much including make the partition under WINDOW XP. Any clue would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Rocky

There is lots of ideas for this you could use fdisk, as you allready have windows how about "partition magic" and are you sure it is freezing depending on the size of your hard drive it can some time.sometimes it reaches a certain percentage and stops for what seems forever maybe download a fresh copy of qtparted from http://qtparted.sourceforge.net/

QT parted should be able to resize windows partition leaving free space for linux partitions. Debian's parted can do same.Mandriva's diskdrake too. Some lappy HDs dont show correct size because many have rescue or restore partition that doesn't always show up. Good luck.

I am going through something similar. None of the toools I have tried will resize the NTFS partition. I just downloaded the gparted live CD, and I am going to give that a shot. Some things I've found in my research that may help you:

Although you should not need to, it won't hurt to defrag the NTFS partition. Also, there may be unmovable data at the end of the drive that is preventing resizing. Try turning off the paging file, as well as the option to let Windows manage it for you. Then, reboot in safe mode and delete the pagefile. Defrag again. Then reboot using whatever has your partitioning tool and try again.

Finally, there are actually two parts to this. The first is resizing the filesystem and then resizing the partition. The ntfsresize utility will resize the filesystem, but not the partition. The other tools (parted/qtparted/etc.) will resize the partition.

As always, nothing is foolproof. Backup everything important before beginning.
