Console not displaying after new kernel

I just compiled the 2.6.7 kernel on my laptop. When I reboot I can't see anything. I wait until I see the harddrive LED stop flashing and I put in my username and password. Then I can type startx to get my window manager. I know I can get it to boot into one of the graphical logins, but what I am wondering is what I possibly changed in the kernel configuration that made the console go away. It looks like it is going to boot into a hi-res console, but I don't actually see any text. I did CONFIG_LOGO=y if that matters. I am not sure what else you may need, but I have the .config file here.

Thanks in advance.

Shell After Login?

After you are into your graphical interface..can you open up a shell session ( console ) from the gui? What do you see if you go to another terminal sessions ( ctrl-alt-f2, for example ), do you see a login prompt there? I don't know how to fix your problem, but maybe checking those items will help to get you started.

Everything from the GUI works fine. I can access no problem. It is when I am in console mode without an X server running that I cannot see anything. I tried to switch to another console session, but it didn't work. I think it is a configuration problem that has something to do with trying to use the higher res console driver or the boot logo option in the kernel config.
