Trying to install various distros on a geat atticware laptop (Toshiba 460CDT)

vid chip is a CT-F65554

I keep running into this issue: The text-mode console is 8 lines "Below" the bottom of the screen .. can't see what I'm typing and can't run xorgconfig and stuff since i can't see the output until I'm past it.

adjusting the monitor doesn't help. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Also what's a real good distro to run firefox and thunderbird on these old machines? (Want to use Fluxbox)
