Connect to a Motorola Q?
 

Howdy Forum,

I'm thinking of getting my wife a Motorola Q; she would basically use it as a phone/PDA and possibly a music player. We use PCLinuxOS at home, and I'm wondering if anyone can foresee potential problems with connecting to a Windows Mobile device for e.g., putting music and photos on it???? It should work just as a regular block device, right?

Also, I'm due for a phone myself, is anybody aware of a LInux-based smartphone available in the US?

linux and motorola q do not work together
 

I have a motorola q, and it does not play well with linux. I have to use Windows XP and Microsoft ActiveSync software to get software, music, etc installed on this beast. I've read about an old, unsupported unix version of active sync program on sourceforge, but I haven't tried it myself.

I really hope Motorola comes out with a Linux smart phone soon which is compatible with linux desktops. That would simplify my life.

I just picked up a Q, and it is possible to get everything working with linux, but it's annoying. I'm working now on getting the ipaq kernel driver to work...

But for the moment, here's how I handle the phone in linux.

I use Bluetooth to transfer the files. Just OBEX transfers. It's quick enough and it works.

For syncing mail and calendars I set up an IMAP server. The Q supports IMAP mailboxes by default.

To get my calendars, tasks, and contacts synced, I got a syncml client for the q, and I use scheduleworld.com as a hub with which I sync all of my stuff.

It's a bulky way to get things done, but It gets things done.

I'm having trouble getting a reliable USB connection though. I've been trying to use a windows XP VM just to see if I can get activesync to work, but so far, I've been unsucessful. I can open the VM and connect a bluetooth adapter, and initiate an activesync connection that way.

Windows Mobile 5 is dogshit, tbh. But the phone is cool.

if you want your Q to show up as a removable disk just install a little app on it called wmstorage when activated it makes the microsd card show up as a removable drive be sure to unmount the volume ***before you remove the usb cable bad things will happen if you dont*** other than that it works like a charm
