Configuring Modem on Dell Inspiron 8600
Hi, I just bought a Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop and installed Linux running the 2.6.2 kernel. Everything seems to work just fine except for the modem.
The lspci -v results in
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82810DB AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [Generic])
Subsystem: Broadcom Coroporation: Unknown device 4d64
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
I/O ports at b400 [size=256]
I/O ports at b080 [size=128]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
I am using the slmodem 2.9.7 driver to install this particular modem which is detected by slamr as ICH4. After using `modprobe slamr` the `dmesg` result ends with
slamr: no version for "struct_module" found: kernel tainted
slamr: module license "Smart Link Ltd." taints kernel
slamr: SmartLink AMRMO modem
slamr: probe 8086:24c6
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1f.6 to 64
slamr: mc97 codec is BCM64
slamr: slamr0 is ICH4 card
Then finally running the command `slmodemd -c=53 /dev/slamr0 I get the following output
SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.7 May 2004 29 23:22:30
modem 'slamr0' created, TTY is '/dev/pts/2'
symbolic link '/dev/ttySL0' -> '/dev/pts/2' created
Use '/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination
On running wvdialconf the configurator succesfully detects the modem and adds the information in the /etc/wvdial.conf.
But when I run wvdial I get the following out put
--> Wvdial: Internet dialer version 1.53
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
-->Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
-->Modem Initialized
-->Sending: ATDT172226
-->Waiting for carrier.
ATDT172226
NO DIALTONE
--> No dial tone.
--> Disconnecting...
I am not being able to find out the exact problem. In fact even minicom gives the same response "NO DIALTONE". I have configured the sound-card using the ALSA driver for 2.6 snd_intel8x0 but, I am not being able to hear the dialtone, otherwise the soundcard is working fine.
If anybody knows a way out of this please let me know. Thanks in advance
