Question Configuration Question, Please Help

Okay, I just received Simply Mepis 3.3 in the mail not to long ago. I would love to replace Windows with this version and continue using linux. Granted, I am a newbie, but with a little help, I could figure this out.

Well, first off...I have a Compaq Presario 2100 notebook. I ran Simply Mepis 3.3 from the disc and I love it. Though, before I can wipe the hard drive clean and start fresh with the Mepis install, I need to know a few things:

a. How to install a modem? What configuration to use? As I mainly use this for the Internet and that is what stalls my switching from Windows. I use dial up. Will a USB modem work? Recommendations?

b. My internal modem is Conexant, I believe and don't think it'll work. As it wasn't detected.

I believe that is all I need to know. Help please.
