compaq laptops

Ok, I have a Compaq presario 900, when I load slackware 8 on it the I get Irq 10 errors for the pci card bus. but the only thing that does not work after this is the sound. SO, I decided to try Slackware 9 thinking this should fix the problem, well it did I have great sound now. but no cdrom.

when trying to install slackware 9 it boots from the disk but once that happens the cdrom locks up and will not let me mount it, it can see it but will not mount, "wrong filesystem" well I just moved the content to another hard drive and that worked fine for installing but now I cannot figure out how to get teh cdrom to work with Slackware 9.

by the way it is a dual boot machine with Xp, and xp will not boot the first time I try after running slackware 9, it locks up and I have to restart to get xp to boot.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME???

Try passing the ide=nodma mode to the kernel when you try to install or start Linux. You can do this through Lilo. I'm not sure if it'll work for your distribution, but I used to run Red Hat 9.0 and had a similar issue.

On a separate note, I just installed Mandrake 9.0 on my Presario 900, and it works fine. Much better than Red Hat 7 or 9. If you've got a fast connection, you might want to try downloading it.

Hope that helps
