Compaq/HP nx9010 - Screen resolution (non-X)

I am having trouble with my screen resolution. I'm running a compaq nx9010 laptop with Debian sarge (kernel 2.6.8). When I ctr+alt+f1 into a console, the text does not fill the whole screen, only about 2/3 ofit. (My resolution is 1024x768 and it looks like its only in 800x600) To be clear, this is not an X problem because KDE, gdm, gnome, etc have no resolution problems. (So, I don't need to edit the XFree86-4 file).

How do I set or change the linux terminal resolution?

Thanks,
jwp

Hi - are you using a framebuffer? If so, there will be a "vga=" section in your lilo/grub configuration file which sets the resolution.

Not sure you can set the resolution if you are not using framebuffer, but could be proven wrong.

yes im using a framebuffer. at installation, I use the boot parameters 'linux26 vga=771 noapic nolapic' I tried playing around with the vga parameter, but it didnt fix much... made it worse actually.

do you know what the 771 means? i think it has to do with the number of cols and rows the screen has...

anyways thanks for your help. I'll scratch aroud some more in grub. if anyone else has any ideas please post them!

My grub config has vga=0x317. And looks just about right for a screen capable of 1024x768.
