Compaq F700 (F754) screen brightness and function keys

Do you know how to control screen brightness in that model of laptop? and how to activate the function (media) keys? (that is, pressing [Fn] plus another key)

I know for sure that media keys are working in ubuntu (I'm using Debian) but I can't find why or by wich driver. Also it seems that screen brightness is not supported by the Gnome Brightness Applet.

Thanks =)!

ok the keyboard issue was retarded =p
(Gnome System->Preferences->Keyboard Layouts/Model [Compaq Presario]) keys are working perfectly, great integration with Gnome =)!

but I suspect the laptop screen brightness control is slightly harder right? (it's a shame.. battery life can be extended decreasing unnecesary brightness)

Thanks ^^

fn key plus the "dark sun" on the top row will darken it. It's a bios thing not os; kde/gnome. glad you found the keymap in control panel. :)
** note; dark circle is dark contrast/ light is light contrast "black level"
bright sun is very bright/ dark sun is very dark (lowers voltage to led back light"
**use Fn + "any key f1-f12" (bios controlled keys) to activate sleep/contrast/brightness. and the power key (quick press. NOT hold) will suspend usually. no driver for these. -eman

Thanks for the reply =)

Well my fn keys are different from what you described. F7 and F8 are the backlight brightness down/up and F11/F12 is last/next song in a media player.

I really wish it could be controlled by the bios.. but its not t.t

It doesnt work here in linux as well as in Windows 2000 or XP. Only in Vista and I suspect thats because of some driver.

Tested with nvidia-settings (there is no slider to control backlight) as well as in Gnome-power-manager.

there is no /proc/acpi/backlight as well as anything about video or gpu.

Well I think I'll have to get used to it t.t

my Fn keys are f5&6 contrast up down, f7&8 brightness up/down, f4 sleep, f9-12 media controlled by key map in control panel. but as stated b4 that my Fn + f1-f8 are built into bios.
yes yours is newer mine says 1999 but i know the hardware well! it's 1996 & remarked.
the hardware is controlled by OpTi. also requires phyDisk suspend software. Mine is old but i did have Xp pro sp2 installed and working (slowly but surely) now it's back to 98se and dsl 4.2.5 hd install not image.
-best of luck to ya.
