I put this away for a while to take care of more pressing matters but now I'm back on it. From reading posts about similar problems, I got the idea that this problem might have been fixed in a later kernel, so I did a fresh install of Suse 10 which brought the Kernel up to 2.6.13-15-default. Some things worked better, but the computer behaves the same at shutdown -- looks like linux shuts down, and the screen goes black, but the lights are still on and the fans are running. Furthermore, it looks like the cpu clock runs at half speed whether the computer is plugged in or running on battery (I only mention that since I think both problems are related to power management stuff).
