Compaq Armada e500

Ok, my apologies if I'm repeating what's been asked before. If so, please flame the high holy hell outta me.
Here's my predicament:

I have a Compaq Armada e500, 900mhz, 192 MB/RAM, and a 6 GB HD.
I've just installed RedHat 9.0, and use the GNOME desktop.
Everything works fine EXCEPT networking, as far as web surfing and downloading files. (with the notable exception that I can snag files from a machine on my network without a hitch)
Web surfing is SLOOOOW (and that's with trying Mozilla, Netscape 7.1, and Opera), and downloading very small files takes forever if at all (example: downloading AMSN basically kept stalling, no matter where I tried getting it.)

Any and all assistance with this would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!

Walt

The network interface (if you have one built-in) is an Intel chip which will run flawlessly with the eepro100 module.
Note that LAN acticity can wake up the laptop if it was suspended but still connected.

I got this from www.linux-laptop.net, that quote came from the E500 section.

And welcome to LQ :)

thanks for the info and welcome.
I did indeed change to the eepro100, and things are working somewhat better (I was actually able to download a file) web browsing is still somewhat slow.
I'd consider myself a step above a linux newbie, but not far from that. Are there any good links for system tweaking, as concerns performance?
Any thoughts on stuff I might need to check before doing any tweaking?
Again, thanks in advance for assisting a whiney newcomer!
:D

You may want to see what services you have running and stop them. Which browser are you using?

Glad to hear you got it up and running.

Currently, Opera is working the best, but still lags.
I've gone thru the services to see what I absolutely need and dont' need, and have pared those down, as well. (i've doublechecked to make sure I wasn't killing anything important, like gpm or somesuch)
I've tried Galeon, Netscape, and Mozilla (yeh, mozilla is effectively netscape and vice versa) AND Opera, but things still take a while to render.
Also, downloads can take forever, although I got one this morning that went somewhat ok.
I am DETERMINED NOT TO PUT XP BACK ON THIS THING, TRUST ME.
;)
