Post the o/p of cat /sys/power/state

In /etc/acpi/events, there's a lid or lidbtn event, which links to a script in /etc/acpi. That script is hanging your box. Maybe point that event at a different script?

Closing the lid should send your laptop to suspend mode. Resume from suspend doesn't work well on current GNU/Linux distributions. I had a problem with suspend/resume using the Fedora 13 SoaS spin. I currently use Slackware 13.1. All distros I've tested had some problem with suspend/resume except Debian Lenny. Seems to be a problem with some Linux kernel feature.

I am not very familiar with Fedora, however, Opensuse 11.x ( I haven't tried 11.3 yet) distro has worked fairly well on my laptop (Dell Precision M90 with Nvidia Quadro FX 2500M, WUXGA). Based on my experience with every distro I have tried, the key is proper drivers, mainly video. YMMV

I have the exact same laptop as the OP. Compaq CQ50. Linux Mint works perfectly with suspend/resume, wireless, sound, etc. I would highly suggest it for this lappy. Slackware on everything else for me though.
